WMO Asia Regional President Launches Report

Dr. Ayman bin Salem Ghulam, President of Regional Association II (Asia) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and CEO of the National Center for Meteorology, officially launched the State of the Climate in Asia 2024 report during a special event organized by the WMO. The WMO Secretary-General, senior officials, climate experts, and representatives from member states and regional and international partners attended the event.

In his address, Dr. Ghulam emphasized that the report serves as a vital scientific reference that reflects the current climate realities facing the Asian continent. Backed by accurate data and in-depth analysis, the report is more than just a scientific document—it offers a clear window into the accelerating environmental changes that affect the lives and well-being of billions of people in Asia and beyond.

He noted that 2024 witnessed a surge in extreme weather events, including intense rainfall, severe heatwaves, prolonged droughts, tropical cyclones, and widespread flooding. The report also provides detailed indicators on sea level rise, glacier retreat, changes in snow cover, and ocean health.

Dr. Ghulam highlighted that the report is the result of broad collaboration between national meteorological and hydrological services across Asia, in partnership with the WMO and various international stakeholders. He praised the dedication of those involved in data collection and their commitment to serving humanity.

He further stressed that the report aims to enhance early warning systems, encourage greater investment in climate adaptation, and strengthen regional cooperation—especially in managing transboundary water and climate risks. Despite the severe climate challenges it faces, Asia possesses vast potential and shared capabilities to respond through adaptation, innovation, and coordinated action.

Dr. Ghulam expressed confidence that the scientific insights provided in the report will support the development of effective policies and actions to confront climate change.

The State of the Climate in Asia is one of the WMO’s most prominent regional reports. It is designed to support policymakers by delivering precise climate data and insights, thereby helping countries build resilience and drive sustainable development in the face of growing climate risks.
