Initiatives and Projects
At the National Center for Meteorology, our mission is to protect lives, support communities, and enhance national preparedness in the face of natural and climate-driven challenges. We are dedicated to advancing meteorological science and technology through impactful initiatives that improve weather forecasting, climate change mitigation, and hazard response capabilities.
These projects represent our commitment to developing cutting-edge systems, expanding monitoring coverage, and establishing regional and national centers for early warning and climate analysis. Through these initiatives, NCM is strengthening its role as a leader in environmental resilience and public safety.
National Transformation Program
Initiative to establish the Regional Center for Early Warning of Storms (Dust/Sand)
The initiative aims to study and analyze data on weather elements and early warning of dust and sand storms, through establishing and operating a center concerned with managing data and information related to dust and sand phenomena, preparing short- and long-term studies and forecasts on these phenomena and their effects on the various sectors in the Kingdom, and supporting the preparation and implementation of the national plan. To adapt to it, through research and study of decadal changes in dust/sand phenomena and their relationship to climate change or not, and implementing a system for monitoring dust and sand phenomena in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after expanding the geographic coverage of meteorological stations.

Initiative to establish a climate change center
The initiative aims to deal with the increasing challenges facing the Arabian Peninsula in the field of climate change and help develop climate information to provide contribution plans for the Kingdom at the national, regional and global levels. This is through establishing a climate change center that works on research and development in several areas, most notably the creation of advanced regional climate models dedicated to the Arabian Peninsula, and participates in research related to adaptation to climate change, and supports the Green Saudi Arabia and Green Middle East initiatives.

An initiative to develop numerical modeling systems to improve the accuracy of forecasts for weather phenomena and natural hazards
The initiative aims to develop the analytical capabilities of the National Center of Meteorology to raise the accuracy of 3-day weather forecasts from 60% to 90%, in addition to increasing the validity period of forecasts from 3 days to 10 days with 80% accuracy, through the development of three numerical models and a nowcasting system that analyzes The data received from monitoring stations available to the Authority and distributed throughout the Kingdom is analyzed and processed to produce short-term weather forecasts in addition to long-term climate forecasts and severe weather warnings.

An initiative to increase the geographic coverage of monitoring stations (surface and upper atmosphere) and remote sensing
The initiative aims to increase the geographical coverage of the Kingdom by 32% to 70% by increasing the number of measuring and monitoring stations for the surface and upper atmosphere and developing the expansion of the remote sensing network by using weather monitoring radars, floating marine stations and upper atmosphere monitoring stations with the aim of collecting comprehensive data on hazards and natural phenomena. Measuring rainfall and monitoring valleys from floods, which enhances the ability to warn early about these dangers and natural phenomena and respond to them, and reduces their effects and the threats resulting from them.
